Secondary Classroom
7th-8th
The Montessori secondary classroom is designed for children aged 12 to 15 years old and is the final stage of the Montessori education. It builds upon the foundation laid in the elementary classrooms and provides students with opportunities for advanced and self-directed learning.
The Montessori secondary classroom typically consists of five main subject areas: language arts, math, science, social studies, and practical life.
In the language area, students continue to develop their reading, writing, and communication skills through more complex materials such as literary analysis, research papers, and public speaking. In the math area, students explore advanced concepts such as algebra, and statistics through project-based learning and real-world applications.
The science area focuses on interdisciplinary studies that integrate different scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Students engage in research and experimentation to deepen their understanding of the natural world.
The social studies area covers a wide range of topics such as history, economics, sociology, and political science. Students explore different cultures, societies, and political systems through critical analysis, research, and debate.
The practical life area continues to support students' physical, emotional, and intellectual growth through activities that promote independence, responsibility, and self-reflection. Students are encouraged to engage in community service and leadership opportunities to develop a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship.
The Montessori secondary classroom is a student-centered environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. The teacher acts as a mentor and guide, providing support and guidance as students pursue their interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and develop the skills and knowledge necessary for success in college and beyond.
