Understanding the Montessori Classroom Environment
At Cypress Junction Montessori, classrooms operate differently than traditional classrooms. Montessori classrooms are intentionally designed to support independence, responsibility, movement, and individualized learning within a structured environment.
Students learn through a combination of:
Small-group lessons with teachers
Individual work and practice
Hands-on Montessori materials
Peer collaboration
Independent work cycles
What Does a Montessori Classroom Look Like?
Our classrooms are active learning environments. Students are not seated at desks receiving whole-group instruction for the majority of the day. Instead, teachers provide targeted instruction through small groups, individualized lessons, conferencing, and guided support.
While not actively working with a teacher, students are expected to work independently within the prepared classroom environment.
Depending on age and developmental level, students may be expected to:
Retrieve work materials independently from classroom shelves
Follow a daily work plan or assigned expectations
Complete independent or partner work
Transition between classroom activities appropriately
Follow established classroom routines
Clean and return materials after use
Demonstrate increasing independence over time
Classroom Structure
Montessori classrooms are collaborative learning environments that may include 30+ students with two instructional staff members, depending on age level and classroom configuration. Students receive direct teacher instruction in small groups and are expected to productively engage in meaningful work while teachers are supporting other students.
Teachers provide support, accommodations, and intervention as needed within a full-inclusion classroom model; however, students should be able to participate in the classroom environment with increasing independence appropriate to their age and developmental level.
Student Support Services
Cypress Junction Montessori is a full-inclusion public charter school. Students with IEPs and 504 plans are welcomed and supported within the general education Montessori environment. However, Cypress Junction Montessori does not operate separate self-contained classrooms or specialized therapeutic programs. Services are provided within the inclusion setting and Montessori classroom model.
Families are encouraged to carefully consider whether a Montessori environment, which emphasizes student independence, movement, self-management, and peer learning, aligns with their child’s learning needs and educational goals.
