Lower Elementary

1st-3rd

The Montessori lower elementary classroom is designed for children aged 6 to 9 years old and is a continuation of the Montessori primary age classroom. It builds upon the foundation laid in the primary classroom and provides children with opportunities for more complex work and deeper exploration of subjects.

The Montessori lower elementary classroom typically consists of six main areas: language, math, cultural subjects, practical life, sensorial, and art.

In the language area, children continue to develop their reading and writing skills through more advanced materials such as grammar boxes, word study, and creative writing. In the math area, children continue to explore and master concepts such as multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry through the use of Montessori materials such as the stamp game, bead frame, and geometric solids.

The cultural subjects area expands to cover a wider range of topics such as history, geography, botany, zoology, and earth science. Children learn about different cultures, civilizations, and ecosystems through hands-on experiences and research.

The practical life and sensorial areas continue to support the child's physical, emotional, and intellectual growth through more complex activities that promote independence, coordination, and concentration.

Lastly, the art area provides children with opportunities for creative expression and exploration through various materials such as clay, paint, and drawing tools.

The Montessori lower elementary classroom is a child-centered environment that encourages collaboration, responsibility, and respect for others. The teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding and supporting children as they engage in self-directed learning and discovery.
