Upper Elementary

4th-6th

The Montessori upper elementary classroom is designed for children aged 9 to 12 years old and is the third stage of the Montessori elementary education. It builds upon the foundation laid in the lower elementary classroom and provides children with more advanced and in-depth exploration of subjects.

The Montessori upper elementary classroom typically consists of five main areas: language, math, cultural subjects, science, and practical life.

In the language area, children continue to develop their reading, writing, and communication skills through more complex materials such as literature circles, research projects, and debate. In the math area, children deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of advanced Montessori materials such as algebraic equations, the decimal system, and fractions.

The cultural subjects area covers a wide range of topics such as history, geography, anthropology, and economics. Children learn about different cultures, civilizations, and social systems through research, experimentation, and field trips.

The science area focuses on exploring the natural world through hands-on experiments and research. Children learn about topics such as botany, zoology, physics, and chemistry through observations, investigations, and experiments.

The practical life area continues to support the child's physical, emotional, and intellectual growth through more advanced activities that promote independence, responsibility, and self-reflection.

The Montessori upper elementary classroom is a collaborative and community-based environment that encourages children to take ownership of their learning and develop leadership skills. The teacher acts as a guide, mentor, and facilitator, supporting children in their pursuit of knowledge and growth.
