Common Q&A’s

What is Cypress Junction Montessori?
Cypress Junction is a free public charter school located in downtown Winter Haven that follows the Montessori Method.

What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a public school that is free to students and funded by the state on a per-student basis.  Cypress Junction will receive the same amount of funding as other public and magnet schools in Winter Haven.  The school will serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. We will also have a VPK and 3 year old preschool on campus.

What is Montessori?
Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process.  Many of the world’s innovators and influencers are Montessori students. Some names you may recognize are Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Beyonce Knowles, YoYo Ma, Julia Child, David Blaine, Anne Frank, George Clooney, Taylor Swift, Wikipedia exec Jimmy Wales, Dakota Fanning and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

When will the school open and what ages will you serve?
Cypress Junction opened for the 2016-2017 school year. The school serves students three years old through sixth grade for the 2016-2017 school year, adding seventh in 2017-2018 and eighth grade in 2018-2019. Cypress Junction will also offer a before and after care program available to children the same ages as the school currently serves.

What are the enrollment procedures and what is the cost to attend the school?
Cypress Junction will have an open application period. After the close of this period, students will be selected  via a random lottery process. Please monitor our social media and website for detailed policies. Any questions can be sent to info@cypressjunction.org.

Kindergarten through eighth grade are free during school hours because we are a public charter school. If offered, VPK will be free during the 3-hour program times. Preschool students will be a tuition-based program. Tuition rates for preschoolers and rates for the before and after care and summer programs are available on our website.

Why is the school called Cypress Junction?
Efforts to find a name that tied into the history and culture of Winter Haven led us to the Cypress Tree, an ancient and steady tree that has long been an icon in our community. The importance of the original railroad and current rail innovations in Winter Haven, inspired “Junction”. We look forward to bringing students and staff from all areas of our community together and fostering a love of learning using the Montessori Method right in the heart of Winter Haven.
